SECRET WEAPONS OF THE LUFTWAFFE
Manual and Reference Guide Addenda
This file contains information about Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (SWOTL)
which was not included in the manual or reference guide.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
To run SWOTL on your IBM, Tandy, or compatible computer, you must have at least
592,000 bytes of RAM available. If your computer is equipped with expanded
memory, you can run SWOTL with as little as 550,000 bytes of RAM available. If
you experience memory related difficulties in running SWOTL, use the DOS
program "CHKDSK" to see how much free RAM your computer has available. You may
need to disable one or more TSR programs (if you're running any) to provide
more available RAM for SWOTL to use.
INSTALLATION PROBLEMS?
If you experience difficulties using the CD Games Shell program to run SWOTL
off the CD ROM here are somes steps you can take:
I. Look into your AUTOEXEC.BAT for the following
A) With QEMM you may find
... LOADHIGH R:x ... MSCDEX.EXE ... /E
1. Remove the /E option (edit, reboot, test)
2. Load MSCDEX low.
a. If this works try adding the /E
II. Look into your CONFIG.SYS for the following
A) With DOS 5+ you may see
DEVICEHIGH = ... your CD-ROM driver (i.e. SONY_CDU.SYS)
1. Load your CD-ROM driver low.
B) Using QEMM check for
DEVICE = LOADHIGH R:x ... your CD-ROM driver
1. Load low, i.e. remove LOADHIGH R:X part
C) QEMM and a CD-ROM using DMA may need the QEMM DMA option
DEVICE = ... QEMM.SYS ...
1. Add (or edit) the " DMA=n " option.
a. This goes at the end of the line.
b. Choose n, the no. of DMA buffers. Try 25.
III. Contact technical support.
DATA DISKS
You can copy all information on a Data Disk to another disk or drive with the
XCOPY command. Follow this procedure to copy the data disk in drive x the y
drive if x and y are different:
XCOPY x:\LUCAS\*.* y:\LUCAS\*.* /S /E
If x and y are the same drive (a floppy drive) use DISKCOPY.
HOT KEYS
Each menu choice in SWOTL has a letter (usually the first) highlighted in red.
These "hot keys" allow you to move rapidly through several menu choices in
succession. For example, if you were at the German main menu, and you wanted
to fly the first Flight School mission for the Focke-Wulf 190, you could simply
type "F 2 1 S". This would access the Flight School menu, choose the FW 190,
choose the "Gunnery Practice" mission, and Start the mission.
"WHERE AM I?"
You can press Alt-W at any time during flight to find out if you're over
friendly or enemy territory.
CAMPAIGN BATTLES
RANGE CIRCLES: The range circle button is directly below the zoom boxes on
the righthand side of the Campaign Map. Click on this button to display a
series of concentric circles that indicate the range in miles from the center
of the map. The number in the center of the range circle button indicates how
many miles each circle represents from the center. This number changes as the
map is viewed at different zoom levels. To turn the range circles off, click
on the button again.
HIGHLIGHTED MAP ICONS: Icons representing installations on the Campain Map
will be bordered by boxes of different colors depending on the situation.
These colors are as follows:
LT BLUE = Currently Selected Installation
DARK BLUE = Installations Similar to the one Currently Selected
RED = Primary Target
GREEN = Secondary Targets
BLACK = Captured Installations
YELLOW = Airfields on Alert and V1/V2 Sites about to Launch
TARGET CIRCLE: A black circle will appear around the BEGIN Way Point of each
Flight Group you create. This circle forces an attacking Flight Group to start
at least 25 miles from its intended target. If you attempt to select a target
within this 25 mile radius, you will be prompted to either move the BEGIN Way
Point or to select another target.
WINNING/LOSING CONDITIONS: There are 8 factors which make up the German war
economy in SWOTL:
1. GERMAN FIGHTER PILOTS
2. DEPLOYED GERMAN GRUPPEN
3. AVIAT. FUEL
4. JET FUEL
5. GASOLINE IN STOCK
6. MUNITIONS IN STOCK
7. BALL BEARINGS IN STOCK
8. TRANSPORTATION CONDITION
Of these 8 factors, only the first 4 have direct impact on the Luftwaffe. The
last 4 factors are general war industries, and so they affect only the German
ground forces. American Campaign Battles will have as a goal the destruction
of the war industries (Strategic Bombing), the Luftwaffe (D-Day Air
Superiority), or both (Final Victory). German Campaign Battles will concern
the defense of the same elements.
THE FRONT: The position of the Western Front will be indicated by the location
of captured installations. As the Allies push eastward across Europe, German
industrial and research sites, as well as Luftwaffe airfields, will be captured
by the Allies. Captured airfields may be used by the Allies to launch attacks
against German targets.
ADVANCED FLIGHT CONTROLS
Suggested for experienced players only, Advanced Flight Controls add another
layer of challenge and flexibility to SWOTL. This option allows you to use an
aircraft's rudder to perform more advanced maneuvers, such as hammerhead stall
turns, etc. Advanced Controls also require more realistic piloting practices
from you, such as:
MINIMUM BAIL-OUT ALTITUDE: Your altitude must be at least 500 ft. to bail out.
SPEED RESTRICTIONS: The speed restrictions for deploying landing gear and
flaps are enforced (see manual pages 152-191). If you exceed the maximum speed
for either of these controls, you will be warned that they are being damaged.
If you do not take corrective action, the affected part will become
inoperative.
MAXIMUM DIVING SPEED: Advanced Flight Controls allow each aircraft type to
dive faster than with Standard Flight Controls, however, the maximum diving
speed is enforced (see manual pages 152-191). If you exceed the maximum diving
speed, you will be warned. If you do not reduce your speed, the control
surfaces on your aircraft will eventually fail, causing it to go into an
irrecoverable spin.
ORDNANCE EFFECTS: The performance of your aircraft will vary with the ordnance
you choose to have loaded onto it. An unladen aircraft will fly faster and
climb more easily than one with a full load of ordnance under its wings. Also,
since everything added to the aircraft increases its overall weight, it will
dive faster and recover from the dive more slowly.
